Travel Documents for Pets

Animals require specific mandatory documentation in order to be transported. Remember that if you have any questions or need information not listed here, our Customer Information Assistance Office is available to help you.

To travel within Italy, dogs and cats must have an Animal Health Certificate or Pet Passport.

To travel within the European Union, dogs, cats, and ferrets must have:

  • a pet passport issued by a veterinarian, showing vaccinations (the rabies vaccination must be valid and up to date) and the general health of the animal;
  • a legible tattoo or an electronic identification system (microchip or transponder).

Beginning August 1, 2024, U.S. authorities require additional steps for bringing a dog into the United States to prevent the spread of canine rabies. These steps depend on whether the countries your dog has been in during the last 6 months are considered low or high risk. You must print this receipt and carry it with you, or have it available on your phone.

In addition to the CDC Dog Import Form receipt, remember that the dog you are bringing must:

  • appear healthy upon arrival
  • be at least 6 months old at the time of entry or return to the U.S.
  • have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.

Transporting pets to the United Kingdom is not permitted, except for recognized assistance dogs. Please contact the local authorities if needed.

Transporting animals to Brazil requires an International Zoosanitary Certificate (CZI).
