General Rules

We also invite you to review the rules for individual travel classes, travel with multiple airlines, and baggage checked through to your destination for connecting flights.

Before being dropped off at the airport, each piece of luggage should be labeled (both inside and out) with your name and mobile phone number. Baggage tags or stickers are available free of charge at the check-in counters, or you may use your own personal tags.

Please note the baggage drop-off deadlines for your travel class.

The data collected by ITA Airways is primarily used to fulfil the carriage contract you have signed with us. This includes both personal and baggage data. To ensure the onward transportation of your baggage with other airlines and its timely handling at airports, we send data to relevant airlines and airports. We also assist customs authorities in meeting their legal obligations by granting them limited access to selected data.

A single piece of baggage cannot exceed 158 cm in total (width + height + depth).

Items exceeding the allowance in weight, size, or quantity are considered excess baggage. Please use our baggage calculator to see all relevant fees.

Baggage Calculator

Our baggage calculator lets you quickly check your baggage allowance based on your route, travel class, and fare. Rates and dimensions for optional baggage are also listed.

If you’ve booked a connecting flight, you can usually check in your baggage through to your final destination, meaning it will be automatically transferred without any action needed during your connection.

Baggage check-through to the final destination is not permitted:

  • If there is a change of airport at the stopover location
  • In the event of operational or local limitations
  • If the customs regulations of the transit country require baggage to be collected for customs clearance and then re-checked

Example: If you arrive in India, the USA, or Canada on an intercontinental flight and continue on a domestic flight, you must collect your baggage from the carousel during your stopover, clear customs, and take it to a check-in counter or baggage drop-off desk.

Special Rules

When booking travel with multiple airlines, the baggage rules of the airline operating the most significant segment of the itinerary (usually the geographically longest route) apply, provided the segment was booked under that airline's flight number. In these cases, it does not matter which airline actually operates the specific flight.

These baggage rules apply through to your destination, unless there is a travel interruption (stopover) of more than 24 hours.

In accordance with consumer protection legislation enacted by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Canadian Transportation Agency, the following baggage regulations apply to flights to, from, or through the United States and Canada:

  • Uniform baggage regulations (e.g., baggage allowance, piece size/weight, and carry-on limits) must apply to all segments of a journey to, from, or through the United States or Canada.
  • Generally, the baggage regulations of the first airline listed on the ticket apply. If ITA Airways is the carrier for the first leg of the journey, ITA Airways' baggage regulations apply to the entire trip (both outbound and return). Please note that carry-on regulations may still vary based on local requirements.
  • Exception: The airline listed first on the ticket may defer the baggage policy to the "Most Significant Carrier." ITA Airways, therefore, cannot guarantee that its baggage regulations will apply to every ITA Airways ticket, as policies often differ between airlines.
  • Your specific baggage allowance is shown on your ticket and in your ITA Airways confirmation email.

For flights within the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may open locked bags for security checks. It is therefore recommended to use a TSA-approved lock.
