Thanks to the numerous immigrants who arrived mainly from Europe and Asia, the Paulista megalopolis is now the most populous city in Brazil and one of the most populous in the world. In addition to the demographic primacy of the nation, São Paulo also holds the financial one, so much so that it is considered the true economic and cultural capital of the country.
Symbol of this wealth is the Avenida Paulista, dotted with financial headquarters but not only: here and in Rua Oscar Freire you will also find the most prestigious haute couture boutiques. However, if you prefer nature to skyscrapers, you can find refreshment in the beautiful Ibirapuera Park or take a trip to the Jardim Botanico. Taking an ITA Airways flight from London to Sao Paulo you can also attend the many events scheduled every year in the city, including the Art Biennale - the most important after that of Venice - and Fashion Week - fifth behind those of Milan, Paris, New York and London. Below, some things to do and see during a trip to São Paulo.
WHAT TO SEE IN SAO PAULO
- - IBIRAPUERA PARK. It is a bit like the Central Park of São Paulo, beloved by the citizens who flock here to play sports, picnics or simple walks away from city traffic. Designed by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, in addition to being a pleasant relaxation area, it is a real cultural attraction thanks to the futuristic architecture of the modernist Oscar Niemeyer. In the park, among tropical plants, ponds and picturesque paths, there are in fact two extraordinary buildings by the Brazilian architect: the Ibirapuera Auditorium, built in 2005, and the Pavilhão da Bienal de Arte, inaugurated in 1957 to host the São Paulo Biennale.
- - AVENIDA PAULISTA. It is the financial and cultural heart of São Paulo and one of the symbols of the city. An avenue almost 3 km long dotted with huge skyscrapers, bars, clubs, restaurants, shops. The ideal place to stop for a coffee, drink a caipirinha or taste typical dishes. Many interesting historical buildings that you find along the way; from the house of Colonel Joaquin Franco de Mello to the Casa das Rosas, as well as the Gazeta Building and the Museu de Arte Moderna.
- - PINACOTECA DE ESTADO. It is the oldest museum in São Paulo and one of the most important in Brazil, thanks to the presence of about 9000 pieces including paintings, sculptures, objects, prints, drawings and photographs. The protagonist of the museum is Brazilian art with thousands of works ranging from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. It is located within the Jardim de Luz, one of the oldest gardens in the city.
- - MUSEO DE ARTE DE SAO PAULO. The Museum of Ancient and Modern Art of São Paulo (MASP) is the most important European art museum in Latin America. Among collections of 15th- to 16th-century Italian painting, Dutch and Spanish painting of the 17th century, and French painting of the 18th century, masterpieces by Raphael, Botticelli, Velázquez, Goya, and van Dick stand out. In modern collections there are paintings by Picasso, van Gogh, Manet, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, Matisse.
