WHAT TO SEE IN WASHINGTON

WHITE HOUSE - It is undoubtedly the main attraction of Washington DC and one of the most famous buildings in the world, thanks to the many images broadcast on television and the numerous films that have immortalized it. It is the residence of the President of the United States of America, the place of decisions and speeches. Commissioned by George Washington, who never managed to live there, and designed by the Irish architect George Hoban in neoclassical and Palladian style, it is characterized by the white color that was used to renovate it after the fire of 1817 by the British. The interior consists of 132 rooms on 6 levels: the most important room is undoubtedly the Oval Office, the president's office, with the Resolute Desk, the 19th-century desk donated by Queen Victoria. Another iconic place is the large 82-hectare park surrounding the villa, President's Park, used for speeches to the nation.

CAPITOL HILL - The other famous symbol of Washington DC, famous all over the world, is the Capitol, with its characteristic white dome. It is the place where the two houses of Congress meet, namely our Parliament, with the north wing occupied by the Senate and the south wing by the House of Representatives. It stands on Capitol Hill, next to another historic building: the Library of Congress. It is the largest library in the world, housing over 50 million manuscripts, nearly 30 million printed books, including the Gutenberg Bible, 8 million musical scores, 14 million photographs, over 5 million maps and 3 million music recordings. Among the numerous objects there are also five Stradivari violins. Also located on Capitol Hill is the Supreme Court building.

NATIONAL MALL - It is the long monumental avenue that in history has been the protagonist of celebrations, speeches and protests such as the march against the Vietnam War in 1969. At its ends are the most important buildings of the city: the White House, the Lincoln Memorial from which Martin Luther King gave the ""I have a dream"" speech, the Capitol, the Jefferson Memorial. At its center stands the Washington Memorial, the tall obelisk dedicated to the founding father of the United States that is reflected on the Reflecting Pool, the large basin at its feet. You can climb to the top to observe the capital from its highest point and take inevitable souvenir photos.

GEORGETOWN - In addition to institutional buildings and extraordinary museums, in Washington DC you can also visit the exclusive Georgetown district, with its picturesque colorful houses, nineteenth-century villas and red brick sidewalks. In the past it has been home to figures such as John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth Taylor, and there is no shortage of restaurants and luxury shops. The composed and elegant atmosphere of the neighborhood is enlivened by the presence of students: here there is in fact the prestigious Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic university in the United States.
