Hand Luggage

Before boarding, please check the size and weight of your carry-on baggage with ITA Airways staff or by using the baggage sizers available by the check-in counters. Baggage that does not meet the requirements may not be accepted on board.

For all ITA Airways flights (except those operated by A330 aircraft), airport staff will tag smaller bags, up to 30 cm x 40 cm x 15 cm, with an 'Under the Seat' label.

To ensure maximum comfort and compliance with safety standards regarding overhead locker capacity, on busy flights, your carry-on baggage may be collected at the gate and placed in the hold. Airport staff will label your bag and provide you with a receipt for collection after landing. This does not apply to intercontinental flights.

Certain countries restrict passengers from traveling with certain items or equipment. In some cases, possession of prohibited items may result in fines. We encourage passengers to consult the consular authorities of their destination country to confirm any restrictions before traveling.

The European Commission has temporarily reintroduced restrictions on the transport of liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) in carry-on baggage. This includes passengers departing from airports equipped with state-of-the-art screening equipment.

Starting September 1, 2024, the maximum limit of 100ml per container will be reinstated at Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino airports, similar to the restrictions in place at airports equipped with traditional X-ray screening technology.
At airports equipped with state-of-the-art screening equipment, LAGs in containers up to 100ml and electrical devices such as your personal devices can still be left in your carry-on baggage during screening.

In all other cases, the following rules remain in effect:
The European Union and ENAC have adopted security regulations that limit the quantity of liquids carried in carry-on baggage beyond airport security checkpoints and on board.

These measures apply to passengers departing from all airports within the European Union, including Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland, for any destination.

Substances Considered Liquids
The following substances are considered liquids: gels, pastes (e.g., toothpaste), lotions, liquid/solid mixtures, the contents of pressurized containers (e.g., shaving foam), hair gel, beverages, soaps, jams, syrups, perfumes, shaving foam, aerosols, and other products with a similar consistency.

New rules for carrying liquids on board came into effect on January 31, 2014.

What is allowed
You may travel with:

• A small quantity of liquids in carry-on baggage, in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml or equivalent (100 g). The containers must be placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a capacity no greater than 1 L, with dimensions approximately 18 x 20 cm, and no larger than one bag per passenger
• Medicines and substances intended for particular dietary purposes, including baby foods; you may be asked to provide proof of their authenticity and of the need to have the specific items with you
• Liquids purchased at duty-free at any airport or airline. Duty-free liquids must be sealed along with the receipt at the time of purchase in a security bag that can only be opened upon arrival at your destination.
• If you have a connecting flight, we recommend informing security so that the liquids can be resealed in a new security bag.
• All other liquids, aerosols and gels must be placed in checked baggage.

For the safety of our guests and employees, small lithium-powered vehicles such as Airwheels, Solowheels, hoverboards, mini-segways, and balance bikes are not accepted as carry-on or checked baggage.

Items deemed hazardous to fly, such as scissors, penknives, Swiss Army knives, or agricultural, scientific, sporting, industrial, or similar tools, as well as realistic replicas of firearms, are not permitted in the cabin. 

The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), pipes, and e-cigars is prohibited in the cabin. Lighters may only be carried on the person.

According to ICAO and IATA regulations, all substances and materials that may pose a risk to air transport are classified as dangerous goods and are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage. 
This includes: 

• Document holders equipped with an alarm device
• Compressed gases (refrigerants, flammable, non-flammable and poisonous) such as butane, oxygen, liquid nitrogen, camping gas, as well as breathing apparatus cylinders
• Corrosive agents, such as acids, alkalis, mercury and wet cell batteries
• Explosives, weapons and ammunition other than for hunting or sporting purposes, ribbon capsules, fireworks and rockets, and toys resembling weapons  
• Flammable liquids and solids, such as lighters and lighter fuels, matches, paints, and solvents
• In the cabin: liquids, even when perfectly packaged (e.g., oil, vinegar, wine, etc.), if they exceed the quantities foreseen by EC Regulation 185/2010
• In the hold: liquids if not perfectly packaged (the packaging must prevent any leaks from damaging other baggage)
• Other dangerous items, such as magnetic, harmful, toxic, strong smelling or irritating materials, oxidizing agents, such as bleaching powder and peroxides
• Televisions
• Poisons and infectious substances, insecticides, herbicides and materials with pathogenic agents
• Radioactive substances
• Alarm devices and any lithium batteries installed for their power supply 
• Underwater torches with batteries inserted
• Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Devices

​​Prohibited and regulated items

Food products of animal origin (meat, milk, and their by-products) can carry pathogens that cause infectious animal diseases.  
The European Union follows strict veterinary procedures and controls regarding these products. Travelers must present these products for official inspections. 
Further information is available from local health authorities. 
Travelers arriving with small quantities for personal consumption from Andorra, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, and Switzerland are exempt.
