Checked Baggage

Items deemed dangerous to flight safety cannot be carried in the hold, such as: matches, lighters, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), pipes and electronic cigars (these items are only permitted as personal carry-on), as well as spare lithium batteries and power banks.

In some countries, local Customs Authorities require passengers transiting to a domestic destination within the same country to collect their baggage at the first entry point, follow customs clearance procedures and then re-check the baggage for their onward flight. At the airport, our staff is always at your disposal for all information on this matter and to guide you correctly in the check-in procedures for checking in your baggage and collecting it at connecting airports.
We would also advise you to label your baggage with your name, address and phone number in case of issues with your baggage.
Cardboard boxes can be accepted as checked baggage as long as they are labelled with your name, wrapped in cellophane, and respect the maximum size limitations for your flight.
It is always best to pack any unusual/different items in an appropriate container or packaging to protect them from damage during loading and unloading of the baggage.
In case of bicycles, for example, you will need to secure the handlebar to one side, remove the pedals, and completely deflate the tires.
Passengers who have requested special assistance, and purchased a light tariff ticket, can purchase additional baggage by calling the dedicated phone line no later than one day before the flight.

For security reasons we would like to inform you that the maximum weight of each item of baggage must not exceed 32 kg.

ITA Airways' liability limitations for lost or damaged baggage are based on the 1999 Montreal Convention, unless a value declaration has been issued prior to travel.

ITA Airways’ liability cover for lost or damaged baggage does not cover damage to expensive, fragile or perishable items. For further information consult the ​current laws in force.
 
You can increase ITA Airways liability coverage by purchasing an additional ‘value declaration’, after which you will be issued an excess baggage ticket with the ticket number of the baggage in question.
 
For both domestic and international itineraries, the liability coverage for each piece of registered baggage can be increased to 500 EUR following payment of 50 EUR for each item. The amount of 500 EUR is paid by the Client Relations Office, in addition to the amounts due under current regulations.
 
The value declaration is also accepted as a fixed sum, even without verification of the effective value of the baggage contents, and does not cover items that are not accepted as baggage or that cannot be carried in the same, in accordance with the ITA Airways General Transport Terms & Conditions. Value declarations cannot be issued for items of a lower value than the fixed cover offered by the Company, as indicated above.
 
ITA Airways will not accept value declarations for the registered baggage if said item(s) are partially transported by another Company.
