Seat Selection Terms and Conditions

The Seat Selection service allows passengers to reserve their preferred seat category in advance on ITA Airways-operated flights in Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class.

  • Passengers book a seat category (e.g., Classic, Extra Space, Duo, etc.) rather than a specific seat number, which may be changed for operational or safety reasons.
  • If the service is not requested by the passenger in the manner described below, the seat will be assigned free of charge by the Airline based on availability and operational and safety criteria.

The service is offered for tickets purchased on the following channels:

  • ita-airways.com website
  • Customer Information Assistance Office and ITA Airways Ticket Offices
  • Travel Agents

“Seat Selection” can be made:

The “Seat Selection” service is free of charge in some areas of the aircraft for:

  • passengers holding BASIC PLUS/BASE and FLEX fares in Economy Class, or FLEX fares in Premium and Business Class
  • passengers traveling with an infant under 2 years of age (infants)
  • passengers traveling with a child aged 2 to 11 years old (children)
  • passengers with physical, cognitive, or sensory disabilities and their companions.

If the fare class does not include free seat selection and the passenger chooses not to purchase a preferred seat, the system will automatically assign one free of charge during check-in, based on availability and operational or safety requirements.

Passengers who are not eligible for the free service may still request a seat change by paying the applicable “Seat Selection” fee at the time of the request.

Traveling with minors

For adults traveling with children under 12 years old, within the same booking, free allocation of seats next to the minor is guaranteed for at least one parent or the accompanying adult. Seat assignment can be made at the time of ticket purchase through the Customer Information Assistance Office; for tickets purchased via a travel agency or online, seat assignment can be made as follows:

  1. in the “Manage Flight” section;
  2. during web check-in;
  3. by contacting our Customer Information Assistance Office.

Adults traveling with minors aged 2 to 11 within the same booking may select certain seat types free of charge:

  • Economy: Back seat;
  • Premium Economy: Classic seat and Duo seat;
  • Business: Classic seat and Duo seat.

Adults traveling with infants (under 2 years of age) may select certain seat types free of charge:

  • Economy: Back seat and Classic seat;
  • Premium Economy: Classic seat and Duo seat;
  • Business: Classic seat and Duo seat.

In the event that the online Seat Selection service fails to assign seats adjacent to the minor for at least one parent or accompanying adult, passengers in Italy may contact the Customer Information Assistance Office. Alternatively, go directly to the airport check-in desks for assistance in assigning nearby seats.

While adjacent seating for the minor and the parent or accompanying adult is guaranteed free of charge, passengers may choose to purchase specific seats for greater comfort during the flight.

Passengers with disabilities

Passengers with physical, cognitive, or sensory disabilities, and their companions, may pre-select seats free of charge by contacting the Special Assistance service using the contact details provided above or at the airport (subject to availability). The travel companion's seat will be adjacent to the disabled passenger.

Payments and refunds

“Seat Selection” is available for purchase for each passenger and each flight segment. The amount paid is non-refundable and non-transferable.

If payment is not made at the same time as the purchase or is not completed, the seat assignment will be canceled.

Payment can be made using one of the following payment methods: Visa/MC/Amex. 

Voluntary Seat Change

If permitted by the ticket fare conditions:

1. Change of seat on the same flight (voluntary reseating)
   A change to any other available seat is permitted:

  • Same seat category: no additional charge.
  • Different category:
    • higher category: payment of the fare difference is required;
    • lower category: no refund of the difference will be provided.

2. Flight change without itinerary modification (same origin and destination)
   If the date is changed while maintaining the same itinerary, any available seat may be selected on the new flight:

  • Same seat category: no additional charge.
  • Different category:
    • higher category: payment of the fare difference is required;
    • lower category: no refund of the difference will be provided.

3. Flight change with itinerary modification (routing change)
   If the flight is changed with a different origin and/or destination, any available seat may be selected:

  • Same seat category: no additional charge.
  • Different category:
    • higher category: payment of the fare difference is required;
    • lower category: no refund of the difference will be provided.

Geographic area change

If the geographic area changes, either for the same or for a different seat category:

  • payment of any fare difference is required;
  • no refund will be provided if the amount is lower.

If the passenger is re-booked on a carrier other than ITA Airways, the service is non-refundable.

Refunds

Voluntary refund

  • Seat-only refunds are not available.
  • If the ticket is refundable, the refund of the service is subject to the fare conditions of the ticket.
  • In the event of a partial refund, the service is refundable only if associated with the refunded segment.

Involuntary refund

A full refund of the service is provided in the event of:

  • reassignment to a lower category
  • loss of the main feature of the purchased seat
  • aircraft change
  • other operational changes not attributable to the passenger

Grace period

The service can be refunded by 11:59 p.m. on the day following purchase (local time of the point of sale), provided that at least five days remain before flight departure.

If a seat refund is requested together with a ticket refund during the relevant cooling-off period, the five‑day limit does not apply.

Where applicable, passengers may request a refund by contacting our Customer Information Assistance Office

Extension of the validity of “Seat Selection”

See article 3, paragraph 3.3, of the General Conditions of Carriage

Requirements for selecting emergency exit row seats

To select a seat located in an emergency exit row, specific requirements must be met.

If these requirements are not met, the seat cannot be confirmed. A new seat will be assigned at the airport or on board, and the amount paid is not refundable.

The passenger must:

  • be at least 16 years old;
  • have the physical strength and full mobility, and be able and willing to provide assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation of the aircraft; 
  • not use any drug that may affect the qualities described above pursuant to the applicable laws and regulations on safety;
  • be able to understand the instructions in Italian or English for the operation of the emergency exit.

Furthermore, to comply with safety requirements, the seats located at emergency exit rows cannot be occupied by passengers who:

  • have reduced mobility;
  • have visual or hearing impairments;
  • are traveling with infants or children;
  • have luggage positioned on the seat;
  • are clearly pregnant;
  • are traveling with pets in the cabin;
  • are severely overweight (with limited mobility that could obstruct access to emergency exits and requiring a seat-belt extender on board).
