Special Baggage

Sports equipment is subject to an additional fee, payable online during check-in or through the - ​Manage Your Flight section. 

Please note:

• Items weighing over 23 kg will also incur an excess baggage fee 
• Equipment must not exceed 300 cm in total dimensions (length + width + height)
• All sporting equipment must be securely packed, preferably in rigid, non-deformable packaging

Small Sports Equipment

The following items are considered small sports equipment:

• Ski and snow equipment (skis, poles, boots, helmet; or snowboard with bindings, boots, helmet; or full snow kiting kit)
• Water skis (one pair or a slalom ski)
• Golf bag (clubs, balls, shoes)
• Polo mallets
• Scuba diving gear (mask, snorkel, fins, suit, BCD, regulator, empty oxygen tank, with the light turned off, batteries removed and protected; speargun with a separate harpoon, unloaded if gas-powered)
• Fishing gear (2 rods, reel, landing net, waders, bait box/haversack)
• Fencing gear (uniform, breastplate, mask, blades)
• Tennis/squash/badminton bag (rackets and balls)
• Archery kit (bow, arrows, quiver, gloves, accessories)
• Kitesurf set (sail, board)
• Hockey/lacrosse equipment (bag, stick, cleats, pads, helmet)
• TCARE medical equipment

Large Sports Equipment

The following items are considered large sports equipment:

• Bicycles (single-seat bicycle, in rigid packaging, with the handlebars fixed to the side, pedals removed and the tires at zero pressure, or a Paralympic bicycle) (excluding bikes with moters/e-bikes) 
• Tandem (in rigid packaging, with the handlebars removed or fixed to the side, the pedals removed and the tires at zero pressure (excluding bikes with moters/e-bikes) 
• Surf (a shortboard-type surfboard) 
• Windsurfing and longboards (a windsurfing board, a sail, a mast, a boom, a waterproof bag; a longboard-type board) 
• Canoe/Kayak (one canoe or kayak (without motor), two paddles) 
• Hang gliding/paragliding gear

In The Cabin
You may carry a musical instrument in the cabin free of charge, in place of your hand luggage, if packed in a suitable hard case, with a maximum weight of 8 kg, and dimensions that do not exceed 115 cm (55 x 35 x 25 cm).

Instruments between 55 × 35 × 25 cm and 52 × 40 × 135 cm, up to 55 kg, require an additional seat booking. This must be reserved when booking or at least 48 hours before departure, subject to availability. Fees equal the cost of an adult Economy Class ticket. Bookings cannot be made online, please contact the ​Customer Information Assistance Office.

In The Hold
Alternatively, when following specific conditions, you can check your instruments in the hold. 

Requests must be made by contacting the Customer Information Assistance Office at least 48 hours before departure. The weight must not exceed 32 kg.

Instruments must be packed securely in a sturdy, rigid, non-deformable case with adequate cushioning material inside. We strongly recommend purchasing specific insurance for your instrument. Please note that ITA Airways' liability for loss or damage is limited under the Montreal Convention (1999), unless a Declaration of Value is completed before travel.

Check-in requirements
If traveling with instruments (extra seat or hold), you must check in at least 60 minutes before standard passenger check-in closes.

The transport of firearms to/from the United Kingdom (both in the hold and in the cabin) is temporarily suspended pending the British authorities' completion of the authorization renewal process for ITA Airways.

Firearms and ammunition are not part of the baggage allowance and must be checked in with a flat-rate surcharge, which varies by destination. Firearms may not exceed 23 kg, and ammunition is limited to a maximum gross weight of 5 kg.

Legal Provisions

The transportation of weapons and ammunition is regulated by specific provisions relating to Law No. 694 of 23 December 1974. According to Article 30 of the Consolidated Law on Public Safety, Royal Decree No. 773 of 18 June 1931, weapons are defined as proper weapons, i.e. firearms and all those whose natural purpose is to harm a person, including pointed and cutting instruments (daggers, stilettos and similar).

Transport

The transportation of weapons and ammunition is regulated by the police and must be reported at the time of booking, in line with current regulations. Weapons and ammunition can only be accepted as checked and labeled baggage until the final destination, provided that:

• Weapons are unloaded, disassembled and packaged in special, separate closed containers.
• The ammunition must be:
  • A maximum quantity of 5 kg (11 lb) per passenger
  • Suitably protected against impacts and sudden movements, packed in special and separate metal, wooden or fibre containers, equipped with safety locks, and resistant to impacts and fire
  • Transported for sporting purposes

The transportation of ammunition containing incendiary or explosive projectiles is strictly prohibited.

If you're shipping firearms and ammunition, they must be in two separate containers, however, only one fee will be charged.
Due to the nature of these items, you will receive detailed information on police regulations and any customs formalities. This ensures you can prepare accurate documentation and avoid disputes with the authorities during your trip.

Transit in Italy

If your trip includes a connecting flight to or from Italy, weapons will undergo customs clearance at the Italian airport of entry or exit, regardless of the final destination.

Upon arrival, ITA Airways or a representative will escort the weapons to the Airport Police Office, where they will be released by an officer. For more details, please contact ​Baggage Assistance

This baggage must be sealed and declared during check-in by a diplomatic courier.

When transporting cinerary urns * in the cabin, you must follow these steps:

• Carry a Cremation Certificate (travel within the EU)
• Verify that the accompanying documentation meets the same requirements as the authorities of the destination country, as well as having the Cremation Certificate (trips outside the EU)
• Ensure that the urn is properly packaged to ensure safety and protect confidentiality
• Make sure the urn is X-ray inspectable (no lead or titanium)
• Contact the operating carrier directly for journeys involving partner airlines
