Fly on SAF
Companies that share the goal of reducing the environmental impact of aviation can join Fly with SAF, contributing to the purchase of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to reduce their carbon footprint.
The program is designed for cargo companies and companies whose staff fly for business.
The contributions from participating companies are used by ITA Airways exclusively to cover the additional cost of non-fossil fuel compared to conventional fuel.
Membership of Fly with SAFis confirmed by a certificate detailing the CO2 emissions avoided through the use of SAF purchased with the customer company’s voluntary contribution. A fully certified process by the leading independent greenhouse gas verifier for aviation, airports and shipping, accredited for CORSIA, EU ETS, UK ETS, ACA, EU MRV, CSI and IMO DCS. Contact our sales representatives for further information on how to get involved.
What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?
SAF is a biofuel produced from waste materials from various sources that can reduce emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional aviation fuel. A wider use of SAF will help to significantly reduce emissions associated with air transport. As SAF is currently much more expensive than conventional fuel, contributions from travellers can help accelerate the adoption of this innovative fuel.
European Union support for the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Within the framework of the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the European Union supports the use of sustainable aviation fuels through the mechanism provided for by Directive (EU) 2023/958 and Regulation (EU) 2025/723 (“FEETS”), the latter laying down rules for calculating the cost difference between conventional fuel and eligible sustainable aviation fuels and the allocation in the EU ETS of quotas for the use of eligible aviation fuels.
For 2024, ITA Airways used 62.07 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), of which 62.07 tonnes were eligible for FEETS support. Based on these volumes, ITA Airways was awarded 549 EU ETS allowances, corresponding to financial support of €35,542.26.
For the 2025 reference year, ITA Airways used 12,146.57 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), of which 5,264.35 tonnes were eligible for support under the FEETS mechanism. Based on these volumes, ITA Airways was awarded 65,637 EU ETS allowances, corresponding to financial support of €4,819,724.91.
ITA Airways’ use of eligible aviation SAF in 2025 was co-funded by the EU Emissions Trading System, helping to accelerate air transport decarbonisation and the spread of sustainable fuels in the industry.
