Impact Fares: a tariff that supports aviation with lower CO2 emissions
Air transport connects people, cultures and economies, and is an indispensable component of a globalised world. This social and economic value must go hand in hand with the ambition to further reduce the impact of aviation on the climate and the environment.
To promote lower-emission and therefore more sustainable aviation, ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group carry out targeted actions such as introducing next-generation aircraft, with improved fuel efficiency, using sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and continuously improving operational efficiency.
Impact Fares are an addition to these initiatives and offer you the opportunity to contribute to this transition by using additional quantities of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on future flights and supporting selected climate protection projects that help avoid or remove CO2.
The choice of this fare does not directly impact the emissions associated with the purchased trip but supports concrete measures that contribute to their reduction. With the term “Impact”, we mean highlighting the positive contribution that support for these measures aims to generate.
Impact Fares are available on domestic, European and most intercontinental flight routes. Depending on the route and fare selected, you contribute to the use of SAF and selected climate protection projects, benefiting from additional Miles & More miles and Points, and the benefits of the fare purchased.
In Italy and Europe
By choosing an Economy Comfort Impact, Business Comfort Impact or Business Flex Impact fare, you contribute:
- to supporting the use of additional amounts of SAF, equivalent to 20% of the estimated CO2 emissions for your flight;
- to funding selected climate protection projects in Europe and around the world that avoid or remove and store CO2, equivalent to 80% of your flight’s estimated CO2 emissions.
These initiatives do not mitigate climate impacts generated by aviation other than CO2 emissions.
In the rest of the world
Impact Fares are also available on many intercontinental routes, with some exceptions (flights to/from Japan and flights from the United States and Canada).
By choosing an Economy Impact, Premium Economy Impact, Business Impact or First Impact fare on intercontinental routes, you contribute:
- to supporting the use of additional amounts of SAF, equivalent to 10% of your flight’s estimated CO2 emissions;
- to funding selected climate protection projects in Europe and around the world that avoid or remove and store CO2, equivalent to the remaining 90% of your estimated CO2 emissions.
These initiatives do not mitigate climate impacts generated by aviation other than CO2 emissions.
