TRAVELING ALONE: SERVICES FOR UNACCOMPANIED MINORS

We know that unaccompanied minors need extra-special care and attention. This is why our services are specifically designed to look after them during every stage of the journey.

How the service works

For passengers aged from 5 to 13 years of age departing for domestic destinations, and from 5 to 14 years of age for international destinations, who are traveling alone, or with a minor escort, or accompanied by an adult in a different travel class, an "Unaccompanied Minor” service is provided.

Unaccompanied minors who are travelling alone, who are over the age limit for the compulsory service, can apply for the 'Unaccompanied Minor Volunteer' service: “Voluntary unaccompanied minor service".

Read on for further details.

Unaccompanied minors

For flight bookings, tickets and to activate the service, please contact Assistance Team or a travel agency, and provide them with the details and phone number of the person who will accompany the minor to the departure airport and collect them from the airport of arrival. In case of connecting flights, it will not be possible to book the last flight of the day for minors, unless only one flight per day is scheduled from said airport. For safety reasons, the person accompanying the minor must remain in the airport until the flight on which the minor is travelling has been boarded.

Required documents

On arrival at check-in, you will need to present:

  • a photocopy of the ID document of the person accompanying the minor to the airport
  • the minor’s valid travel document
  • The Unaccompanied Minor "AFFIDAVIT" form, duly filled out and, in case of international flights, for the minor of 14 years of age:
    • For Italian minors under 14 years of age, or in case of immigration from the place of residence, a Declaration of Accompaniment is required. This must be signed by the parents or whoever takes their place, endorsed by the Police Headquarters (or by the Consulate or the Italian Embassy if overseas), and must include the name of the airline company with which the child will be traveling. The form is only available in Italian language;
    • Minors with a document issued in a different nation (not Italian), should consult the Embassy or Consulate website in the country of destination.

Are there any additional fees?

There is a variable surcharge for the 'Unaccompanied Minor' service, which varies depending on the destination of the flight. Consult the table and tariffs here.

Voluntary unaccompanied minor service

This service provides a travel assistant for minors between:

  • 14 - 17 years of age for national flights;
  • 15 - 17 years of age for all other flights.

Call Assistance Team to book the "Voluntary unaccompanied minor” service. The fees for airport and onboard assistance, are the same as the obligatory unaccompanied minors service.

The service can be purchased on flights operated by the ITA Airways group and payment of the additional fee must be made at the time of booking confirmation for the entire journey.

For connecting flights, in the event ITA Airways has to accompany the minor on a different connecting flight than the one purchased, the service will also be guaranteed on the new flight.

The maximum expression of Italian quality can also be found in the careful selection of partners who provide our Fantasia Lounge services, creating a unique environment that is not only entertaining, but also helps our travelers of tomorrow learn and grow.

Educational and experimental play comes to life through the vibrant colors of the Carioca brand, which stimulate the imagination and encourage them to explore new horizons on a large whiteboard, ready to be filled with drawings.

The themes of adventure, travel and discovery are further explored in the literary proposals made available by the Feltrinelli chain of bookstores. Over 200 Feltrinelli Kids and Gribaudo titles for young readers aged 5 to 15. Classics, atlases and encyclopedias: stories great and small, ordinary and extraordinary, can be found in the library of the Fantasia Lounge.

Quercetti entertains little ones, enriching the lounge with an original Pixel Art interpretation of the Blue Savoy livery. Established in 1950, the company stands out for its production of innovative, high-quality, 100% Italian toys, designed to stimulate the child’s cognitive and sensory development.

Versatile masterpieces of Italian design, the iconic Zanotta bean bags appeal to both children and adults alike, inviting them to reinterpret and use them in a creative way.

Finally, the young guests of the Fantasia Lounge will be given a Flight Booklet to take on board, which the Captain will sign and fill with all the relevant technical information (flight number, destination, flight time, type of aircraft). After ten flights, the young travelers can obtain an ITA Airways Junior Pilot certificate by scanning the QR Code in the booklet and using the applicable Instagram filter to take a selfie as a ‘real’ pilot and share their new milestone with family and friends.
