A trip to Naples is a unique journey through culture and folklore... And don't forget to taste the fantastic pizza in its original recipe. Here are some of the things you can see on a trip to Naples.
What to see in Naples
- Spaccanapoli: It is the long artery that cuts the city in a straight line and goes from the Spanish Quarters to Forcella. The best way to see Naples in all its facets: along the way you will find sumptuous ancient palaces and beautiful churches, but also curious shops, old artisans, street vendors, street artists, noise and improvised music, scooters and tourists, all together in a chaotic mix that is the most faithful postcard of Naples.
- Veiled Christ: An incredible work that will leave you speechless. The marble veil with which the statue of Christ is covered is so expertly worked to the point of making it transparent. A detail that has always fascinated observers and fueled legends. The statue is in fact inside the Chapel of Prince San Severo, a well-known alchemist, and it was thought that the veil was the work of some concoction created by the prince himself to change the original fabric into marble. It is actually only the work of the great skill of its creator, Giuseppe Sanmartino, who managed to carve the statue with the veil from a single block.
- Piazza del Plebiscito: It is the new symbol of Naples, a place for strolls for tourists and Neapolitans who come here to admire its grandeur and the architectural jewels of the Royal Palace and the colonnade of the Church of San Francesco. Originally a plain where medieval tournaments were held, it became the symbol of Neapolitan politics with the passage of time and until 1817. Palazzo Reale was built in 1600 by Domenico Fontana commissioned by Viceroy Don Fernando to host the passage in the city of King Philip III, while the Greek-style colonnade was commissioned by Gioacchino Murat in 1800, who also ordered the removal of the statues present to give breath to the square, thus giving it the current scenic impact.
- Underground Naples: Under Naples there is an entire network of tunnels that over the years were used in various ways, from shelter for bombings to landfills, up to hiding places preferred by criminals. Today this suggestive underground city can be visited with access from Via dei Tribunali but also from some private homes. In the underground you will find the Greek-Roman aqueduct, the air raid shelters, the war museum, the underground gardens and the "Arianna" seismic station. Also dug underground is the Bourbon Gallery, commissioned in 1853 by Ferdinand II to unite the Royal Palace with Piazza Vittoria and thus allow a possible escape to the sea. The Gallery has also been used in different ways, from air-raid shelter to judicial deposit.
