Flying from Cagliari - Sardinia to Delhi: tips and information for your trip
A magical, chaotic crowded and captivating land, the nation of India is the perfect destination for a different and stimulating trip. Take a flight to India and land in the capital New Delhi, which is full of things to do and see, including the Red Fort, the Lotus Temple, the majestic Jama Masjid mosque and Qutb Minar. These are just a few of the architectural beauties of a city that never ceases to amaze and is full of vitality, aromas, sounds and flavors.
What to see in India
Here is a list of things to see once you've landed in New Delhi.
- The Red Fort: a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, the Red Fort is an impressive construction whose walls extend for 2.5 km and stand up to 33 meters high. The fort was built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648. The architectural style blends elements of Islamic, Persian, Hindu and European traditions, while its distinctive color is given by the sandstone from which it is made. It is both the symbol of Delhi and also the independence of India from the British, which was announced from these walls during the night of the 14 and 15 August 1947. The interior of the structure contains various pavilions, a large garden and the imperial apartments.
- Lotus Temple: so named for its distinctive form that resembles a lotus flower, it is one of the few sacred sites in the world where it is possible to worship all religions. Its location at the center of a huge garden gives it a unique feeling of peace and serenity.
- Qutub Minar: thanks to its height of 72.5 meters, it is the highest brick minaret in the world. Built to celebrate the Islamic victory over the last Hindu king, it is spread across five floors, three made from red sandstone and two from sandstone and marble. It is located within the Qutb complex, which also contains various other historical monuments. The area and the minaret itself have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Humayun's Tomb: Thanks to its architectural style, this mausoleum is often said to be a precursor of the Taj Mahal. Completed in 1572, it was built by the Empress Bega Begum after the death of her husband, Mughal Humayun. It is located at the center of a great garden made in the Persian style, together with the tombs of the descendants of the emperor. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
- India Gate: the symbol of New Delhi, an arch of 42 meters built to commemorate the fallen in World War One and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, which were both fought alongside the British. It is especially evocative if you visit in the evening, when the gate and the surrounding fountains are lit up and the area swarms with people, mostly locals meeting for an evening stroll.
- Chandni Chowk: a market that could be said to be symbolic of Indian culture. Situated in the old town, it is a chaotic mix of small shops, street vendors, animals, tourists and locals. It is also the perfect place to buy an original souvenir at a good price to take home with you.
